• Our current housing crisis can almost entirely be linked to our city’s abandonment of Single Room Occupancy & Boarding House dwelling policy & offerings.

• The private sector, however, has not abandoned these housing options. On the contrary, they have exploded the industry, it is simply now referred to as ‘roommate culture’. Landlords & corporations have realized that the desire to live within the 5 boroughs will almost never wane, & that desire could be commodified into making working class citizens pay double, sometimes triple, what they should for a rooming space (or Single Room Occupancy) In order to keep up with demand for Single Room Occupancy, traditional multi-room apartments & homes have been retrofitted to accommodate single strangers rather than growing families. This has led directly to the proliferation of gentrification & deed theft in historically black & brown communities, who cannot compete with younger people willing to pay upwards of 50% of their $80k+ salaries to have a safe place to call home in NYC.

• Additionally, the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) has been sabotaged & left to erode by politicians paid off by the same landlords & real estate corporations profiting from turning historic homes into revolving door abodes.

• Choosing a future that builds with the intent to bring down housing costs across the board will require rebuilding the entirety of our NYCHA campuses — with buildings twice as wide, three times as tall — & full of Single Room Occupancies (SROs), micro studios, & micro 1-bedroom units, in addition to traditional apartments. 

• This will achieve many civil goals — bringing down housing costs, offering truly affordable housing to NYC’s most financially vulnerable, offering easily accessible housing to those experiencing homelessness or domestic violence, & preparing for the ever-increasing migration into the boroughs.

• The complete demolition & rebuild of NYCHA campuses with these alternative housing options— including the cost of giving all current NYCHA residents new, fully paid off apartments — will be covered through the passage of DJ’s ‘Donor State Act’; a key aspect of his New Blue Reconstruction, bypassing the limits placed on social housing through the Faircloth Amendment by allowing the source of construction funding to originate from the state.

• The only way to address this current & forthcoming housing crisis is to invest deeply into our Social Housing stock through NYCHA. We must secure our native & long-standing NYC communities by offering a public option to decrease the cost & increase the supply of traditional market-rate units. This can only be achieved through modernizing & expanding NYCHA, with the inclusion of Single Room Occupancies (SROs), micro studios, & micro 1-bedroom apartments.

Hakeem Jeffries has not publicly supported the idea of Universal Healthcare since 2019. We’ve experienced the worst pandemic in over 100 years & the bulk of his healthcare efforts have been targeted at maintaining the Affordable Care Act, which still leaves 15 million Americans without coverage. His efforts were for naught, of course, with the enhanced ACA subsidies being cut in 2026.

• Medical debt is sitting at over $200 billion, growing more & more every day. The possibility of the average American becoming chronically ill or disabled is about 1 in 4. 

• We cannot continue on our current path of healthcare, that sees profit in patients & the continuation of their ailments & disease.

• Supporting Universal Healthcare will change the course of American history. No more will people have to choose between life-saving treatments, surgeries, & medicine or living a dignified, comfortable life.

• Universal Healthcare will be one of three state-funded public assistance programs to bolster the working class. Operating in tandem with Universal Basic Income & Universal College to provide security & opportunity.

Hakeem Jeffries has never taken a public stance on providing American citizens with the most substantial assistance program imaginable — cash in hand. He has not taken any action toward this level of sustained financial security for the country.

• However one may feel about offering citizens unrestricted & direct universal basic income, there has been substantial studies & pilot programs that demonstrate not only the feasibility of such programs, but the immense societal benefit.

• The figures often used to dissuade conversation about this life-saving assistance from the state are inflated & neglect to consider many important fiscal realities & factors.

• Approximately 20% of all UBI will be returned to state & federal government coffers via income taxes. Approximately 70% of the remaining UBI will be injected back into the economy via sales tax & traditional household spending. This understanding brings the true cost of UBI to roughly 24% of the any projected figure.

• Essentially, it comes down to mere pennies to lift every American man, woman, & child out of poverty.

Hakeem Jeffries supports our current Student Loan system as is, which leaves tens of billions of Americans defined by their school debts. He refused to support cancelling all student loan debt, instead favoring Biden’s choice to only cancel approximately 10% of the country’s total student loan debt, which has since reaccumulated through new loans. He has never supported the idea of Universal College for the people of the country.

• Student loan debt is sitting at over $1.6 trillion, only exceeded by mortgage debt. Many student loan borrowers have repaid their principal loans & then some, but find themselves owing more than what they initially borrowed — as if they never paid a dime toward the debt.

• The student loan industry is predatory, & was intentionally constructed to saddle multiple generations will insurmountable debt. This essentially locks people out of true upward mobility, segmenting them to the working class in perpetuity, regardless of their degrees.

• Universal College will benefit everyone. A more educated population will better understand their world, their rights, & their actions within our society. 

• With other developed nations’ literacy rates dwarfing ours, now is the time to invest in our people & secure the future of the American mind.
